This Day In Hockey History (3/19)

It is time to crack open the week with another “This Day In Hockey History”.  Sometimes we just do not realize how good a player is until they are gone awhile.  However, Phil Esposito was kind of always one of those rare cases.  He was one hell of a goal scorer as his career numbers point out but today’s moment is the type that makes you go wow, given the era.  What would Esposito have done in 2012?  It is a good question.  But 40 years ago today, he did the following….

 

 

March 19, 1972


Phil Esposito scored three goals, including two power play goals for a new NHL season record of 27, and added an assist as the Bruins won 7-3 over the Minnesota North Stars, at Boston Garden.

This Day In Hockey History (3/19)

Here is a moment today that we may take for granted especially in this time and age.  However, 78 years ago this was a huge deal.  Here comes that moment from yesteryear as always complete with just an amazing jaw drop.  Many think that this moment occured much later yet it did not.  Even Coach Tortorella would approve of this.

 

 

March 19, 1933


The first day game in NHL history was played, with the Detroit Red Wings at Chicago, and a 3:30 PM starting time. The Red Wings won 4-3 as NHL President Calder looked on.

Chicago Blackhawks retired Denis Savard’s #18 sweater, in a pre-game ceremony before a 1-0 win against the visiting Montreal Canadiens.
