This Day In Hockey History (6/22)

This has already been a sad day in more ways than one but 32 years ago came the ultimate boom that many in hockey saw coming for a few years.  It was a moment that truly changed hockey forever.  Would we have 30 teams today?  I doubt it if the following did not happen…..

 

 

June 22, 1979


The Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques and Winnipeg Jets joined the National Hockey League, as the NHL expanded to 21 teams for the 1979-80 season. The World Hockey Association ceased operation.

Today its about the MERGER.  Yes you know which one.  Just 31 years ago, the WHA folded and four teams went into the NHL.  Here is more.
