This Day In Hockey History (1/31)

Sure the All Star Break was nice but hey its time to get back to work.  What do we have for “This Day”?  Let’s find out.  Being the last day of January and all, the search for moments was not very hard at all as the inbox was filled with some good classics.  When all was said and done, the choice was very clear however.  The Montreal Canadiens had a phenomenal run of four straight Stanley Cups in the late 1970’s.  Today’s moment comes from 34 years ago on this day.  As always, we have the video first and the moment soon to follow.

 

 

January 31, 1978

Montreal’s Jacques Lemaire scored his 5th career hat trick as the Montreal Canadiens extended their team-record undefeated streak to 18 straight games (16-0-2), with a 5-3 win against the Rockies, at Colorado.

This Day In Hockey History (1/31)

Today’s moment will cause some controversy but only because of what I am about to say.  The player that had the most impact in the NHL was not Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux, it was actually Bobby Orr.  Here is one of Bobby’s moments from 39 years ago today.

January 31, 1971

Boston’s Bobby Orr scored twice, to give him 100 career NHL goals (2nd defenseman in team history) and added an assist in a 6-0 win over the Blues. Eddie Johnston recorded his 18th career shutout, as the Bruins won their 17th straight home game.
