This Day In Hockey History (12/8)

Today was another significant day in Montreal history, let’s see what it was.  As far as timing goes, there are events that unexpectedly change a franchise.  Well what happens in the aftermath?  Today’s moment kind of examines that very concept.  This moment happened 16 years ago today and as always we have a little video and then the gem.  Here it goes…

December 08, 1995

Montreal named Pierre Turgeon as their new team captain, replacing Mike Keane (who had been traded). Turgeon became the 22nd captain in Montreal Canadiens’ history.  Remember Keene had been traded in the infamous Patrick Roy deal just after Roy was shelled and left in by Coach Mario Tremblay.

This Day In Hockey History (1/28)

Today’s moment is from a time when goals were often scored in bunches and the over/under was probably something like 8 1/2 or 9 1/2.  It definitely was a time where offense was way up and defense became often optional to say the least.  This one is from 1989 and spotlights one of the real good guys that played in that era of the NHL.

Bernie Nicholls scored his 49th and 50th goals of the season in his 51st game, and set a team record with 13 shots in the game, as the Kings lost to the Oilers, 7-6 at the Forum.

Paul Kariya scored a power play goal for Anaheim and his younger brother Steve had an assist for Vancouver, as the Mighty Ducks tied 2-2 against the visiting Canucks, in the first NHL game featuring both Kariya brothers.
