Do you join for fun, business, or are you a hybrid when it comes to fantasy hockey leagues? Here is an interesting take below on the business vs. fun side of fantasy sports and we want the fantasy hockey fans to apply it to hockey. How do you do it?

The latter. Big no-no. Fantasy football isn’t personal — it’s business. Especially if you have money on the line. If you’re a Jets fan and you say, “I hate the Patriots so I’m not drafting any stinkin’ Patriots because the Patriots suck and the Jets rule and where’s my green-and-white construction helmet? and…uh….oh yeah: J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!” then not only would I want to punch you in the throat for being a Jets fan, I’d want to do it again (while you’re lying on the ground writhing in pain, holding your broken windpipe with both hands and wheezing) because you passed on Welker/Gronkowski in favor of Derrick Mason/Dustin Keller simply because you preferred their green-and-white helmets and uniforms, and because you, for some stupid reason, thought you needed at least one Jet on your squad. Bottom line, do not let your personal fan allegiances sway your fantasy decisions. Period. Draft with your brain, not your heart. Or your penis. Because that’d be weird.

While I don’t necessarily think you should go out of the way to draft a player from your favourite team, it’s healthy to select guys who you actually want to cheer for. People sometimes forget that the primary reason they’re playing fantasy football is to have fun while enhancing the football-watching experience. Well, the perfect way to do that is to make sure you can tolerate rooting for the guys on your team.
And while this may be blasphemes to some, please keep it mind that reality should still trump fantasy. If you’re not a fan of the game itself and a specific team — if the standings don’t mean anything to you — then you’re a bad sports fan. The goal of playing fantasy sports should be to add to the enjoyment, and maybe make some money. If your priorities are in that order, you owe it to yourself to draft a player from your favourite team.

The debate offers which side you are on. Is it fun or business but the real question may involve the following. Are you actually a hybrid when it comes to fantasy sports? It is an issue we will be delving deeper into as the fantasy hockey season gets underway in the next week. It will be a fiery debate indeed. Thanks again to Fantasy Sport Court.
