Fantasy Hockey MINI ONE (4/1)

This is the time of year where the goaltenders start to take the true spotlight.  One of the biggest things we keep hearing is how the schedule just sets up for certain teams.  Honestly it really does.  Now you will see it on our “Looking Ahead” column later but we have the classic feast or famine schedule in the final week because team schedules are a little more spread out.  Do note that Tampa plays four time in the six day week (starting Monday).

If your league starts on Sunday, this is the “Week Of Truth”, especially in roto and points league plus some playoffs that go that far.  For leagues that truly value categories, we are in that time of utter stress and fun all rolled into one.  Now let’s get down to business and it is time to unveil our Fantasy POTN.

===============================================

FANTASY POTN:

Mike Smith, G, Phoenix Coyotes — Sure they played the Anaheim Ducks last night but the Ducks were very game as they pounded the Coyotes to the tune of 44 shots.  Guess what?  Mike Smith stopped each and every last one of them as Phoenix won 4-0 on a milestone night.  What you had to like was the simple fact that Smith tends to find a way to come through in the clutch when a fantasy team needs it.  His weekend record is pretty solid for fantasy owners.  Phoenix has three games to seal a playoff spot with a home game against Columbus then a road test at St. Louis followed by a road game the next night against Minnesota.  The week sets up potentially well for Smith.

===============================================

QUICK LOOK BACK:

Ray Whitney, W, Phoenix Coyotes — When you are only the 79th player to score 1000 points in NHL history, that gets you a place today on here.  Also, Whitney had a goal and assist which is just as big of a reason.  “The Wizard” has enjoyed a resurgence in Phoenix and yet so many fantasy players drafted him late and could not believe the results.  Radim Vrbata gets a bit more press with his 33 goals and 11 GWG but Whitney has a 75 point season going (24 G 51 A) in 79 games.  There is a lack of respect but an even more glaring lack of fantasy respect.  Thank you Ray Whitney for bailing several of my leagues out this season.

Ilya Kovalchuk, W, New Jersey Devils — Hey Ilya, nice effort last night!  Kovalchuk had a goal and two assists.  His goal came seconds after a power play expired which deprived owners of another power play point on the night but the bottom line is Kovalchuk will lead his team in scoring for the fifth time in his career without leading the league in scoring (thanks Rich Chere).  The bottom line is New Jersey has three games left on the year and could produce another 3-5 points potentially.

Honorable Mention:  Brad Marchand, Tyler Seguin, and Patrice Bergeron — 8 points combined and a +9.

SCHEDULE TIME:

Sunday, April 1, 2012

Teams Notes
Philadelphia at Pittsburgh 12:30 PM | Gameday
Ottawa at NY Islanders 3:00 PM | Gameday
Florida at Detroit 4:00 PM | Gameday
Boston at NY Rangers 7:00 PM | Gameday
Minnesota at Chicago 7:00 PM | Gameday
Edmonton at Anaheim 8:00 PM | Gameday

Yes the first game is probably the biggest of the day but typically with Sundays, even the Anaheim game to end the night will mean something fantasy wise.  There are always goofy circumstances that often present themselves at the oddest of times.  Do we keep an eye on it?  You bet we do.  Here are a few players you may want to keep an eye on today.

==============================================

KEEP AN EYE ON:

Kris Letang, D, Pittsburgh Penguins — Word is Letang could play with the Simon Despres demotion but keep an eye come game time anyway as this will be a last minute decision.  If he plays, you have to put him in I suppose but just watch how he plays.  It is a rare start/watch.

Claude Giroux, C, Philadelphia Flyers — Giroux has seen 16 goals go in for Philly and not had a role in any of them.  Then he tried some bizarre back end move yesterday in the shootout.  Philadelphia lost that shootout and Giroux just looks like he is gripping the stick too tight.  If today’s matchup against Pittsburgh does not get him going, this could be a struggle that lingers even longer.  Elite players have to step it up.  Let’s see what happens.

Jimmy Howard, G, Detroit Red Wings — Did anyone learn the lessons from Tomas Vokoun and the chronic “lower body injuries”?  Howard will start today in a home tilt against the Florida Panthers but keep an eye to see how he looks in his movements.  Something tells me that groin is not quite 100%.  Let’s just leave it at that.

Tim Thomas vs. Henrik Lundqvist — This is a big one as Lundqvist and Thomas have both righted the ship lately and both teams need the two points.  Many fantasy GM’s are looking to this matchup as well so if the lights are right, we are in for one hell of a night.  If not, then look out!

=============================================

Good luck and again thanks for reading.  We are getting closer and closer to the end.

Fantasy Hockey MINI ONE (4/1)

First off would this guy’s team stand a chance?  It is an interesting question but hey at least the production is nicely done.  Whether that team does well is anyone’s guess but at least there was no April Fools Day video thrown up here today.  The thought did cross our minds at first.

Today we wanted to do something completely different and use our strange numbers prowess for even more evil.  Thanks to Dan Offerdahl, a system was devised that will definitely spark some debate.  Every points system has its flaws but since everyone wants to see a shootout anyway, this would be sort of perfect.  Right?  Well maybe.

Let us unveil this for what it is and this is the EUFA System:

Rules are simple as you get three points for a regulation win, one point for an OT or SO win and you get NOTHING for a loss.  That is right.  As Willy Wonka said, “YOU GET NOTHING, GOOD DAY SIR!”. Yes this is mean and unfair, but hey that is life sometimes.  Now here goes……

2010-11 EUFA STANDINGS:

Western Conference:

  1. Vancouver 142 (1)…
  2. Detroit 120 (3)…
  3. San Jose 115 (2)…
  4. Phoenix 112 (4)…
  5. LA 112 (5)…
  6. Nashville 110 (6)…
  7. Chicago 107 (8)…
  8. Anaheim 106 (7) ::::

————————————————–
Minnesota 95 (11)…
Dallas 94 (9)…
Calgary 92 (10)…
St. Louis 91 (12)…
Columbus 82 (13)…
Colorado 64 (14)…
Edmonton 61 (15)
————————————————————————-

Eastern Conference:

  1. Philly 126 (1)…
  2. Boston 123 (3)…
  3. Washington 111 (2)..
  4. Montreal 109 (6)…
  5. Pittsburgh 107 (4)…
  6. NY Rangers 101 (8)…
  7. Tampa 98 (5)…
  8. Toronto 94 (10) ::::

————————————————-
Buffalo 91 (7)…
Carolina 89 (9)…
New Jersey 85 (12)…
Ottawa 84 (14)…
Atlanta 69 (11)…
NY Islanders 68 (13)…
Florida 67 (15)”
————————————————————————

Now the key is in all of the EUFA standings is this, the real conference rankings are in parenthesis.  Yes we used a big word there.  There are some noticeable drops in doing it this way but could you imagine Toronto in the playoffs?  This is a scary thought but under this system, they would indeed be in if the season ended right now.  As for the West, there would be a bit of a logjam for spots 3-8 but the bottom part of the West would be just about out of the playoffs.

Yes we do apologize for pulling a bit of a prank on the Fantasy Hockey Mini One in this sense.  You were expecting fantasy numbers and bests of the night and such and then we go off and toss in some dream standings mumbo jumbo.  I can hear it now.

Okay okay now we will give you a small portion of what happened last night fantasy wise. This is on us and hopefully will not happen until next April 1st or will it be worse?  No one seems to know.  Either way, here is a very quick edition.

A Look Back:

1. Chris Mason (Atlanta) — Well he made 43 saves in a 1-0 win against Philly in Philly.  That would make it kind of obvious that he was our Fantasy POTN and first choice here.  It kind of makes you wonder if only he could have played like last night a little more this season.  However, it is what it is in Atlanta.

2. Craig Anderson (Ottawa) — He struck again with another big night and this time against Florida, who also slapped in the face two teams ago.  That 37 save effort and combined output since he was traded to Ottawa has rewarded the many who never gave up on him or could stash him away on their bench.  If he can stay healthy, Anderson will help Ottawa improve next year.

3. Patrick Marleau (San Jose) — Marleau looked the best he has in what feels like months last night though he only tallied twice.  Clearly he has to hit the back of the net for San Jose to be effective. The more he does that, the better off the Sharks will be.  Down the stretch, he is actually a very good START in leagues as his numbers over the past few years indicate a point a game clip every year over the last 7 games of a regular season.  Go figure.

SCHEDULE TIME:

FRIDAY, APRIL 1, 2011

Teams Notes
Philadelphia at New Jersey 7:00 PM
Chicago at Columbus 7:00 PM
Calgary at St. Louis 8:00 PM
Colorado at Phoenix 10:00 PM

So with a condensed four game schedule tonight, it will be interesting to see if St. Louis can score any goals after scoring ten against Detroit, will Philly be able to right the ship in New Jersey, and can Phoenix keep it going?  More importantly, Rick Nash is still out for Columbus and Ryan Miller is hurt more than maybe meets the eye.

This all sets up a weekend that could be your final weekend depending on your league.  Basically here is who to watch for tonight in a condensed edition.

Our Three To EYE Up:

1. Keith Yandle (Phoenix)

2. Miikka Kiprusoff (Calgary)

3. Patrik Elias (New Jersey)

Good luck everyone in your fantasy leagues and come out swinging!
