Thanks to Anthony as we explore Simon Gagne and his top 5 destinations….one will not be Philly more than likely.
It seems inevitable at this point that long time Flyers forward, Simon Gagne, is on the way to a new team.
Dan Carcillo was re-signed by the organization this afternoon, thus placing them deeper in cap trouble. Of course, Gagne still has to officially waive his No Trade Clause; and if it is for the right destination, all signs point to him doing so.
It will be a sad day in Flyer Land when Gagne goes; but, again, at this point (especially with Carcillo re-signing) it seems truly inevitable.
With absolutely zero coming from the rumor masters, and using pure logic here at RLD, we’ve come up with our top five destinations on where Gagne will be traded to.
1. Los Angeles Kings
Sure, they say they’re out, but weren’t they out of the Ilya Kovalchuk sweepstakes as well — twice? Next thing you know, Kovalchuk is in Dean Lombardi’s office meeting face-to-face to discuss a deal. The Kings need some support on the wing, and Gagne is a prime candidate to head out to L.A. However, if Kovalchuk does get signed by the team, all bets are likely off.
2. Colorado Avalanche
The young, promising Avs showed a lot with a post-season birth that was unpredicted. Outside of Milan Hejduk, a true veteran presence is missing from the forward core. That veteran presence Gagne brings would be a welcome addition for the youngsters already on board with Colorado. Gagne is a talented player that can help the likes of any of those he plays with and is surrounded by.
The Avs have a promising young organization, and with a Gagne-like addition, could be an even better team when October rolls around.
3. Detroit Red Wings
Not why, but why not? If they were interested in bringing in Mike Modano, why would they pass on a talent such as Gagne? There are plenty of pieces available that the Wings can move in order to acquire Gagne. Another power play producer, another veteran winger, and another gifted goal scorer to add to the mix.
4. Toronto Maple Leafs
Of course, Gagne is no where near a Brian Burke type of player. However, if you look at what Gagne brings as a whole, instead of a hole-filler, there could be something here.
Yes, Toronto’s main focus is a top line center; but they have a roster of youth — talented youth mind you — in which a veteran like Gagne could provide much more to the team. His guidance both on and off the ice is a very valuable asset to bring into an organization filled with young stars.
5. Phoenix Coyotes
An unpredictable playoff run, with some promise shown while in their first season back in the playoffs since pre-lockout hockey means why stop now? With Matthew Lombardi, Zbnyek Michalek and Lee Stempniak all departing, a few places need an upgrade within the roster.
Of course, with all the turmoil surrounding the organization, it could play out to be a rewarding acquisition from both ends. Gagne has just one year remaining on his contract and likely wouldn’t have to worry if he doesn’t like the desert come July of 2011.
It seem the consensus around the NHL is that Gagne (or any contract for that matter) will not be moved until the Ilya Kovalchuk situation is settled.
Until then…..
