This Day In Hockey History (3/8)

We are just rolling along here on a Thursday with another moment from hockey yesteryear on “This Day”.  So how important was Mike Bossy?  It is special to see a gem like this one come across our inbox.  Therefore, since I sense a theme that has to do with tons of goals, this seemed just perfect.  The milestone today comes from 25 years ago and it was the last time Bossy did this.  We probably gave way too much away already but here it goes…..

 

 

March 08, 1987

Islanders’ Mike Bossy scored the 39th (and final) hat trick of his NHL career, in a 6-5 win over the Blackhawks at Chicago. It was also the 100th hat trick in Islanders’ history.

One has to always love those milestone that say “the first to do this”.  Well today on “This Day”, we have Gordie Howe accomplishing yet another first.  There will be a video and then the moment. Here it goes.

 

 

March 08, 1960

Gordie Howe became the first player in history to play in 1,000 career NHL games (including playoffs) as the Red Wings beat Canadiens 3-0 in Detroit. He only received a minor penalty in the game, while Terry Sawchuk got his 81st career shutout.

The moment today is kind of a funny yet strange one. Everyone has to be the first in something and in this case, it was Mark Recchi. Here goes something.

March 08, 1995

Montreal’s Mark Recchi became the first NHL player to take penalty shots for 2 different NHL teams in one season, when he missed against Dominik Hasek in a 2-2 tie against the Sabres, a month after he missed on a shot with the Flyers vs Ottawa.
