This Day In Hockey History (1/25)

Good morning.  It is time for another edition of This Day.  We normally praise the streaks and milestones of players but sometimes it does not go quite so well.  Sometimes, it really does go right down the toilet.  There are streaks that just go so bad in the wrong direction, one wonders if that team can even win just one.  Our moment today comes from 15 years ago and yes this team was awful.  In the end, they would have one huge laugh but here is a video and moment from “This Day”.

 

 

January 25, 1996

The Ottawa Senators set an NHL record with their 16th consecutive home game without a win (0-15-1) in a 4-2 loss to Detroit at the Palladium. They broke the old record of 15 shared by the 1928 Black Hawks & 1939 Canadiens.

Today is a day we are thankful for inbox suggestions as we go with our own moment in the collection as opposed to one randomly generated.  Let’s see what was cooking on This Day a certain amount of years ago.  But first we look back at yesterday because we missed a doozy and Isles fans let us know about it!

Mike Bossy scores 50th goal in 50 NHL games

Oops!  That was really awful of us to forget.  Again we apologize.  Now we have this excerpt from history.com.

Jan 25, 1924:

First Winter Olympics begin in Chamonix, France

Now that is history and here is a bit more.  Bonus question.  when did hockey become an Olympic Event?

On January 25, 1924, the first Winter Olympics kick off in the Alpine village of Chamonix, France. Originally conceived as “International Winter Sports Week,” the Chamonix games were held in association with the 1924 Summer Olympics, held in Paris, and boasted 258 athletes (247 men and 11 women) from 16 nations, competing in a total of 18 events.

Pretty amazing when you think about what it has become today.

There is no other way to say it, he was The Great One.  This amazing milestone accomplished 24 years ago on this day.

 

 

December 05, 1986

Edmonton’s Wayne Gretzky picked up three assists, to give him 1,400 career NHL points (in 580 games), when the Oilers won 4-2 at Pittsburgh. Gretzky joined Gordie Howe, Marcel Dionne, Phil Esposito & Stan Mikita in the 1,400 point club.

Evidently it is raining like a monsoon out there but it is time for another This Day on the blog. Today we salute a bit of the Brass Bonanza err a player who played for the Hartford Whalers. Here is a video then the moment as always.

Hartford’s Pierre Larouche began a team-record 9 game goal scoring streak in the Whalers’ 6-5 win at Chicago.
