This Day In Hockey History (11/21)

Yes the sound you hear in Pittsburgh is bells of joy as Sidney Crosby is back.  However that is not our moment today.  This one is a bit different as far as moments because it involves a rule change that would be considered bizarre today but made perfect sense back in the old days.  Let’s get ready for some old time hockey because here is a video first.  Next, the moment will appear and it is from 69 years ago this day.

 

 

November 21, 1942


The NHL Board of Governors announced that overtime would be discontinued in regular season games because of conflicts with train schedules. Overtime was finally reinstated in the 1983-84 season after a 41-year absence.

November 21, 1987


King Olav V of Norway watched from behind the Montreal bench, as the Canadiens beat the Devils 2-1 at the Forum. Bobby Smith and Chris Chelios each scored a goal and added an assist in the second period for Montreal.

Scott Hartnell scored the 1,000th goal in Nashville Predators history, an overtime winning goal at 1:31 in a 4-3 win against the visiting Anaheim Mighty Ducks. It was Hartnell’s first career overtime goal.
