This Day In Hockey History (10/5)

This probably surprises quite a few people and there were likely greater moments in history today but this one has its own place because it is a first.  Firsts are always nice because they will never happen again.  Now we are not here to debate the merits of this one but it did happen 11 years ago and probably makes some fans still cringe to this day.  They had to name someone, right?  Well here is a video and today’s moment.

 

 

October 05, 2000

Defenseman Lyle Odelein was named the first Captain in Columbus Blue Jackets history. The announcement came two days before the team’s first NHL game.

Just a little over 48 hours until the start of the regular season which means the moments may actually start involving regular season hockey.  Today’s happened 21 years ago and some wonder if he only could have played in the NHL at a younger age.  But what if’s are for another time.

 

 

October 05, 1989

Soviet hockey veteran Sergei Makarov made his NHL debut with a goal and two assists in the Calgary Flames’ 10-7 win over Detroit.

BallHype: hype it up!

Manic Monday on This Day with border wars and some games on the schedule…it makes for a fun day. Today we have a small milestone of sorts for a guy who stole my beer. Yes its a true story.

October 05, 1991

Stephane Richer scored twice in his debut with the Devils, including the 200th goal of his NHL career, and added an assist to lead the team to a 7-2 win over the visiting St. Louis Blues.
