Morning Skate (12/23)

Two days until Christmas…are you ready?  Here is Ryan with the Morning Skate.

THE MORNING SKATE

The Morning After:

Yesterday’s scores:

Islanders 2, Lightning 1 (OT)

Penguins 5, Panthers 2

Red Wings 5, Canucks 4 (OT)

Blackhawks 4, Predators 1

Predictions record: 3-1

My 3 stars of the night:

1. Henrik Zetterberg, DET (2 Goals, 1 Assist)… Hank’s three points and OT winner helped Detroit get by a tough test against Vancouver.

2. Jack Skille, CHI (2 Goals)

3. John Tavares, NYI (1 Goal, 1 Assist)

Tonight’s Slate:

Penguins @ Capitals, 7:00

Panthers @ Sabres, 7:00

Islanders @ Devils, 7:00

Lightning @ Rangers, 7:00

Thrashers @ Bruins, 7:00 ET

Canadiens @ Hurricanes, 7:00

Canucks @ Blue Jackets, 7:00

Red Wings @ Blues, 8:00

Senators @ Predators, 8:00

Flames @ Stars, 8:30

Wild @ Avalanche, 9:00

Oilers @ Kings, 10:30

Coyotes @ Sharks, 10:30

Games of the Night:

Pittsburgh Penguins @ Washington Capitals

7:00 ET… TV: NHL Net. (US), Local Networks

Records:

Overall: Penguins (23-10-2) … Capitals (20-12-4)

Last Ten: Penguins (8-2-0) … Capitals (2-6-2)

Away/Home: Penguins (11-4-1) … Capitals (13-4-3)

Season Series (09/10): 4-0 Penguins

Players to watch:

PIT- Sidney Crosby

Sid’s point streak is still alive at 22 games and has 33 points in 19 games vs. Washington.

WSH- Alex Ovechkin

‘Ovie’ is goalless in seven games but always ramps it up for Pittsburgh.

Projected Goaltenders:

PIT- Marc-Andre Fleury (2010/11 stats: 15-7-1, 2.30 GAA)

WSH- Michal Neuvirth (2010/11 stats: 14-6-2, 2.59 GAA)

Injury Report:

PIT- Jordan Staal (hand, out), Mike Comrie (hip, out), Brent Johnson (lower body, doubtful)

WSH- Jeff Schultz (thumb, out), Boyd Gordon (lower body, out), Matt Bradley (finger, out), Matt Hendricks (undisclosed, probable), D.J. King (undisclosed, out), Tyler Sloan (groin, out)

Game Thoughts:

Tonight marks the first game between these two rivals, and it will all be captured on HBO’s cameras. The Pens and Caps square off in D.C. in what will surely be a great contest. Pittsburgh has won 17 of their last 22 games, while Washington is starting to get back on track after dropping eight straight. Although the Caps won all four head-to-head meetings last season, I think the Pens will steal two points in a thriller.

Prediction: Penguins 4, Capitals 3

Atlanta Thrashers @ Boston Bruins

7:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Records:

Overall: Thrashers (19-12-5) … Bruins (17-11-4)

Last Ten: Thrashers (6-2-2) … Bruins (5-3-2)

Away/Home: Thrashers (9-5-3) … Bruins (8-6-3)

Season Series: 1-0 Thrashers

Players to watch:

ATL- Andrew Ladd

Captain Ladd’s point production hasn’t been as consistent in December and needs to turn it around.

BOS- David Krejci

Krejci has been solid this month, producing at a point-per-game rate.

Projected Goaltenders:

ATL- Ondrej Pavelec (2010/11 stats: 12-6-3, 1.82 GAA)

BOS- Tim Thomas (2010/11 stats: 15-4-3, 1.70 GAA)

Injury Report:

ATL- None

BOS- Mark Stuart (finger, out), Brad Marchand (undisclosed, questionable), Trent Whitfield (Achilles, out)

Game Thoughts:

The struggling Bruins will look to rebound from Monday’s shutout loss tonight against the upstart Thrashers. Atlanta took the first meeting on home-ice, so Boston will do their best to return the favor. Craig Ramsay’s club has not won in Beantown since the 2006/07 season, but the B’s haven’t been consistent at home. Despite that, I think the B’s take this one.

Prediction: Bruins 3, Thrashers 2

Lock of the Night:

Predators over Senators… Barry Trotz’s club has lost two straight, but is resilient. Look for them to win in Pekka Rinne’s return to the crease.

The rest of tonight’s predictions:

Sabres over Panthers

Devils over Islanders

Rangers over Lightning

Hurricanes over Canadiens

Canucks over Blue Jackets

Blues over Red Wings

Stars over Flames

Wild over Avalanche

Kings over Oilers

Sharks over Coyotes

Morning Skate (12/23)

BallHype: hype it up!

Thanks again to Ryan as always. Hopefully everyone gets a little of what they wished for this holiday season.

The Morning After:
Last night’s scores:

Sharks 3, Blackhawks 2
Ducks 4, Avalanche 2
Canucks 4, Predators 1
Predictions record: 2-1

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Evgeni Nabokov, SJ
(45 Saves, 2 GA)
The ice was tilted Chicago’s way, but ‘Nabby’ stood tall in net as he faced pressure all night.
2. Ryan Getzlaf, ANA (1 Goal, 1 Assist)
‘Getzy’ led the Ducks on a furious comeback in Denver, and tallied the game-winner with under 30 seconds left.
3. Henrik Sedin, VAN (1 Goal, 2 Assists)
Henrik had a couple nice primary setups for the Canucks, and scored the dagger 4th goal.
Dud of the Night:
Colorado Avalanche
… Holding onto a 2-0 lead midway through the 3rd, the Avs looked like they would get the 2 points; but they didn’t get any! Joe Sacco’s club blew the two-goal lead, and the Ducks scored twice in the last 26 seconds to win 4-2.

Tonight’s Slate:
Thrashers @ Bruins, 7:00 ET
Maple Leafs @ Islanders, 7:00
Panthers @ Rangers, 7:00
Sabres @ Capitals, 7:00
Senators @ Penguins, 7:00
Canadiens @ Hurricanes, 7:00
Oilers @ Wild, 7:00
Flyers @ Lightning, 7:30
Blackhawks @ Red Wings, 7:30
Blue Jackets @ Stars, 8:30
Ducks @ Coyotes, 9:00
Blues @ Flames, 9:30

Games of the Night:
Buffalo Sabres @ Washington Capitals

7:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Records:
Overall:
Sabres (22-10-3) … Capitals (22-8-6)
Last Ten: Sabres (6-3-1) … Capitals (7-3-0)
Away/Home: Sabres (10-5-0) … Capitals (10-2-3)
Season Series: Tied 1-1

Players to watch:
BUF- Ryan Miller

With the Sabres offense scoring by committee, Miller will need to continue to carry the team.
WSH- Tomas Fleischmann
Fleischmann already has 10 points in 9 games this month.

Projected Goaltenders:
BUF- Ryan Miller
(09/10 stats: 21-7-2, 1.89 GAA)
WSH- Jose Theodore (09/10 stats: 9-5-4, 2.94 GAA)

Injury Report:
BUF-
Thomas Vanek (abdomen, questionable), Patrick Kaleta (neck, questionable), Nathan Gerbe (groin, questionable), Chris Butler (ankle, out)
WSH- Semyon Varlamov (groin, out), Shaone Morrisonn (undisclosed, questionable), Brian Pothier (ribs, out), Boyd Gordon (back, out)

Game Thoughts:
Two of the best in the East square off in DC tonight! This will be their third meeting this year, with the home team winning both times. The Caps are coming off an up and down road trip with this one game before Christmas. Buffalo rallied to beat Toronto (again) and usually have success in Washington. Go with the mild upset here…
Prediction: Sabres 3, Capitals 2

Ottawa Senators @ Pittsburgh Penguins
7:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Records:
Overall:
Senators (18-14-4) … Penguins (25-11-1)
Last Ten: Senators (5-5-0) … Penguins (7-2-1)
Away/Home: Senators (5-9-1) … Penguins (12-6-1)
Season Series: 1-0 Senators

Players to watch:
OTT- Alex Kovalev

When facing his former team, Kovalev usually has success.
PIT- Bill Guerin
I have a hunch that Guerin will have a goal or two tonight.

Projected Goaltenders:
OTT- Pascal Leclaire
(09/10 stats: 8-5-1, 2.71 GAA)
PIT- Marc-Andre Fleury (09/10 stats: 21-9-1, 2.40 GAA)

Injury Report:
OTT-
Jason Spezza and Nick Foligno (knee, out), Pascal Leclaire (jaw, probable), Chris Neil (knee, probable), Shean Donovan (knee, out)
PIT- Mark Eaton (lower body, questionable)

Game Thoughts:
Last month, the Sens spanked the Pens while the champs were struggling. With both coming off a shutout loss, I’ll be interested to see how they respond. The Sens are a different team away from home, but have owned the Penguins in the Igloo over the last few years. I think that trend will take a break, though, and the Pens get back on track.
Prediction: Penguins 4, Senators 2

Chicago Blackhawks @ Detroit Red Wings
7:30 ET… TV: NHL Net. (US), Local Networks

Records:
Overall:
Blackhawks (23-9-3) … Red Wings (18-13-5)
Last Ten: Blackhawks (7-3-0) … Red Wings (5-4-1)
Away/Home: Blackhawks (7-5-2) … Red Wings (11-6-2)
Season Series: Tied 1-1

Players to watch:
CHI- Patrick Sharp

He hasn’t been ‘sharp’ lately, but needs to help out offensively tonight.
DET- Todd Bertuzzi
The Wings don’t have a lot of offense right now, so Bertuzzi will have to shoulder some of the load.

Projected Goaltenders:
CHI- Antti Niemi
(09/10 stats: 7-1-1, 1.76 GAA)
DET- Jimmy Howard (09/10 stats: 11-7-1, 2.36 GAA)

Injury Report:
CHI-
Cam Barker (lower body, questionable), Dave Bolland (back, out), Ben Eager (upper body, questionable), Adam Burish (knee, out)
DET- Henrik Zetterberg and Dan Cleary (shoulder, out), Johan Franzen, Niklas Kronwall, Jonathan Ericsson (knee, out), Jason Williams (leg, out), Valterri Filppula (wrist, out), Andreas Lilja (head, out)

Game Thoughts:
This Original Six rivalry renews for the second time in four nights. The ‘Hawks lost a nailbiter to San Jose last night, while Detroit has been off since losing 3-0 to these guys on Sunday. I think Mike Babcock will have them prepared, with the mentality that they have to win. It may not be pretty, but I do believe the Wings will find enough offense to win this one.
Prediction: Red Wings 4, Blackhawks 3 (OT)

The rest of tonight’s predictions:
Bruins over Thrashers
Maple Leafs over Islanders
Rangers over Panthers
Hurricanes over Canadiens
Wild over Oilers
Lightning over Flyers
Stars over Blue Jackets
Coyotes over Ducks
Flames over Blues
