The Morning After:

Yesterday’s scores:

Penguins 5, Flyers 1

Bruins 4, Devils 1

Canadiens 4, Senators 3

Islanders 5, Avalanche 2

Panthers 6, Lightning 0

Capitals 3, Predators 2 (OT)

Blue Jackets 3, Wild 2

Stars 3, Blues 2 (SO)

Blackhawks 4, Sabres 3

Red Wings 2, Coyotes 1 (OT)

Flames 5, Oilers 3

Thrashers 4, Sharks 2

Predictions record: 6-6

My 3 stars of the night:

1. Sidney Crosby, PIT (2 Goals, 1 Assist)… Crosby continued his dominance of Philly, scoring two huge third period goals to seal the win.

2. Tomas Vokoun, FLA (29 Saves, Shutout)

3. Kari Lehtonen, DAL (41 Saves, 2 GA)

Close but no cigar: M. Jurcina, NYI; T. Thomas, BOS; M. Neuvirth, WSH; P. Sharp, CHI; T. Plekanec, MTL; L. Eriksson, DAL; J. Howard, DET; Chris Mason, ATL

Quick-hit Observations:

– Washington imposed their well on the Predators in the third period, forcing the game to overtime where they won 3-2. The Preds seemed to run out of gas and couldn’t lock down the two points. It was a great game with many chances both ways.

– Calgary really needed the win they got last night over rival Edmonton before heading out on the road to Nashville and Detroit this week. Also, will Jarome Iginla’s game-winning goal spark something for him?

– The Thrashers showed me something by winning in San Jose. Not only did they do it on the back half of a back-to-back, but they came from behind to do so. Dustin Byfuglien victimized the Sharks once again, scoring the game-winner in the third.

– Fact: the Leafs, Stars, and Isles are leading their respective divisions. Fact: the Canucks and Devils are in last place in their respective divisions. Fact: it’s October 17.

Tonight’s Slate:

Coyotes @ Ducks, 8:00

Hurricanes @ Canucks, 9:00

Game of the Night:

Carolina Hurricanes (2-1-0) @ Vancouver Canucks (1-2-1)

9:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

2009/10 Season Series: 1-0 Hurricanes

Players to watch:

CAR- Brandon Sutter

Sutter had two goals in the opener, but pointless in the two games since.

VAN- Daniel Sedin

Daniel has come out of the gates on fire with 6 points in 4 games.

Projected Goaltenders:

CAR- Cam Ward (2010/11 stats: 2-1-0, 2.29 GAA)

VAN- Cory Schneider (Career stats: 2-5-1, 3.46 GAA)

Injury Report:

CAR- None

VAN- Alex Burrows (shoulder, out), Sami Salo (Achilles, out), Keith Ballard (concussion, out), Alexandre Bolduc (ankle, out)

Game Thoughts:

The Hurricanes are either getting the Canucks at the perfect time or the worst time. Alain Vigneault has to be frustrated with the two games in So Cal, losing in Anaheim and Los Angeles. Carolina is coming off a loss in Ottawa, so will be looking to bounce back as well. I see this game going past 60 minutes, and Vancouver struggles to get the two points.

Prediction: Canucks 3, Hurricanes 2 (SO)

The rest of tonight’s predictions:

Coyotes over Ducks
