Maple Leafs 3, Canadiens 1

Red Wings 4, Devils 1

Thrashers 5, Islanders 4

Wild 3, Kings 2 (OT)

Sharks 2, Blackhawks 1 (OT)

Predictions record: 6-7

My 3 stars of the night:

1. Steven Stamkos, TB (2 Goals, 1 Assist)… Stamkos had two goals and three points, including a rocket slap-shot to beat Vancouver in OT.

2. Rick Nash, CBJ (2 Goals, 1 Assist)

3. Ryane Clowe, SJ (2 Goals)

Close but no cigar: A. Lindback, NSH; J. Oduya, ATL; S. Doan and K. Yandle, PHX; B. Boucher, PHI; C. Ward, CAR; C. Anderson and P. Stastny, COL; P. Datsyuk, DET; T. Kaberle, TOR; D. Jeffrey, PIT

Tonight’s Slate:

Capitals @ Rangers, 7:00 ET

Canucks @ Oilers, 8:00

Wild @ Ducks, 8:00

Game of the Night:

Washington Capitals @ New York Rangers

7:00 ET… TV: NHL Net. (US), Local Networks

Records:

Overall: Capitals (18-10-3) … Rangers (17-13-1)

Last Ten: Capitals (4-5-1) … Rangers (6-4-0)

Away/Home: Capitals (6-6-1) … Rangers (6-8-1)

Season Series: 1-0 Capitals

Players to watch:

WSH- John Carlson

With Mike Green’s inconsistencies, Carlson must step up offensively.

NYR- Marian Gaborik

Against the high-flying Caps, Gaborik has to be a game-breaker.

Projected Goaltenders:

WSH- Semyon Varlamov (2010/11 stats: 4-3-0, 2.06 GAA)

NYR- Henrik Lundqvist (2010/11 stats: 12-11-1, 2.57 GAA)

Injury Report:

WSH- Mike Green (flu, questionable), Jeff Schultz (thumb, out), Tyler Sloan (groin, out)

NYR- Chris Drury (finger, out), Vinny Prospal (knee, out), Steve Eminger (back, doubtful), Derek Boogaard (shoulder, doubtful)

Game Thoughts:

Who could have foreseen this losing streak from Washington? Every team goes through a bad stretch, but they are struggling mightily with five consecutive losses. The Rangers usually play them tough at home, so it won’t get easier tonight for Alex Ovechkin and company. Both teams are coming off games last night; I see the Rangers taking advantage on home-ice.

Prediction: Rangers 3, Capitals 2

The rest of tonight’s predictions:

Canucks over Oilers

Ducks over Wild

BallHype: hype it up!

The Morning After:
Last night’s scores:

Capitals 4, Hurricanes 3 (OT)
Panthers 4, Devils 2
Sabres 2, Blackhawks 1
Red Wings 3, Ducks 2 (OT)
Oilers 5, Blues 3
Avalanche 2, Lightning 1 (SO)
Wild 2, Flames 1 (OT)
Stars 3, Sharks 2 (SO)
Predictions record: 5-0-3

My 3 stars from last night:
1. Dustin Penner, EDM
(1 Goal, 3 Assists)
Penner tallied 4 points in the Oilers’ big comeback in St. Louis.
2. Patrick Lalime, BUF (39 Saves, 1 GA)
In his first start in what seemed like ages, Lalime came up huge for the Sabres with a 39-save performance.
3. Alexander Semin, WSH (2 Goals)
Semin’s pair of goals rejuvenated a Caps team that was getting beat 2-0 by the worst team in hockey.
Honorable Mention: M. Kiprusoff, G. Brule, M. Havlat, T. Bertuzzi, M. Frolik, M. Turco
Dud of the Night:
Blues’ collapse
… St. Louis was beating Edmonton 3-0 late in the 2nd, looking forward to a comfy lead going into the final frame. That wasn’t so, and Gilbert Brule’s late goal in the period swung the momentum in Edmonton’s favor. It carried over to the 3rd as the Oilers scored four goals to stun the St. Louis faithful. The Blues are now a shoddy 5-10-2 on home-ice…

Tonight’s Slate:
Flyers @ Devils, 7:00 ET
Bruins @ Islanders, 7:00
Sabres @ Rangers, 7:00
Canadiens @ Thrashers, 7:00
Hurricanes @ Senators, 7:00
Capitals @ Maple Leafs, 7:00
Ducks @ Blue Jackets, 7:00
Panthers @ Penguins, 7:30
Red Wings @ Predators, 8:00
Sharks @ Coyotes, 8:00
Wild @ Canucks, 10:00
Stars @ Kings, 10:30

Games of the Night:
Detroit Red Wings @ Nashville Predators

8:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Records:
Overall:
Red Wings (18-9-2) … Predators (14-14-2)
Last Ten: Red Wings (6-4-0) … Predators (3-6-1)
Away/Home: Red Wings (7-4-0) … Predators (7-7-0)
Season Series: 1-0 Predators

Players to watch:
DET- Todd Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi scored 2 goals last night, and usually posts good numbers vs. Nashville.
NSH- Martin Erat
Erat is arguably the hottest player in the league right now, with 9 points in the last 5 games.

Projected Goaltenders:
DET- Chris Osgood
(09/10 stats: 6-5-4, 2.75 GAA)
NSH- Pekka Rinne (09/10 stats: 13-6-1, 2.59 GAA)

Injury Report:
DET-
Johan Franzen and Niklas Kronwall (knee, out), Valterri Filppula (wrist, out), Dan Cleary (shoulder, out), Jason Williams (leg, out), Andreas Lilja (head, out)
NSH- None

Game Thoughts:
‘Smashville’ should be rockin’ tonight as the red-hot Preds play host to rival Detroit. The Wings staged a comeback victory last night vs. Anaheim. Osgood should be in net, but he hasn’t fared well against the Preds in their last few outings dating back to last year. Nashville is 11-3-1 in their last 15 games, and plays their best hockey against Detroit. I like the Predators in another back-and-forth tilt.
Prediction: Predators 3, Red Wings 2

San Jose Sharks @ Phoenix Coyotes
8:00 ET… TV: Local Networks

Records:
Overall:
Sharks (13-8-9) … Coyotes (18-11-2)
Last Ten: Sharks (4-3-3) … Coyotes (6-2-2)
Away/Home: Sharks (6-5-4) … Coyotes (11-5-0)
Season Series: 1-0 Coyotes

Players to watch:
SJ- Devin Setoguchi

This is a guy who needs to get it going, pointless in 6 games since coming back from injury.
PHX- Zbynek Michalek
He has 3 points and a +4 rating in the last 7 games since returning from injury; the team is 5-1-1 in those games.

Projected Goaltenders:
SJ- Thomas Greiss
(09/10 stats: 3-2-0, 2.94 GAA)
PHX- Ilya Bryzgalov (09/10 stats: 17-8-2, 1.98 GAA)

Injury Report:
SJ-
Brad Staubitz (face, out), Jody Shelley (soreness, out)
PHX- Kurt Sauer (headaches, out)

Game Thoughts:
Could the Sharks really go 5 games without a win?? That’s what’s on the line in the desert tonight. Phoenix has won 5 in a row at home, and are playing very good hockey right now. San Jose needs to play with more sense of energy tonight… if they don’t, Brygalov and the ‘Yotes will win.
Prediction: Sharks 2, Coyotes 1

The rest of tonight’s predictions:
Devils over Flyers
Islanders over Bruins
Sabres over Rangers
Thrashers over Canadiens
Senators over Hurricanes
Capitals over Maple Leafs
Ducks over Blue Jackets
Penguins over Panthers
Canucks over Wild
Kings over Stars
