Monday Ice Water Cooler

Yes the white stuff!!!!!

BallHype: hype it up!

It must be getting closer to Winter….early season snows are blanketing the Midwest and moving East today. All it really means is that hockey is rolling along. Almost two weeks since Opening Night and yes it is a holiday today as well. So for an added treat there is two afternoon hockey games. Boston is home to Colorado and the Islanders are home to the Kings at 1 and 2pm ET respectively. That means brunchtime hockey for those out on the West Coast.

Though Henrik Sedin had two assists last night. Was it me or did he look a bit lost out there? Can you really blame him? He did play over 23 minutes in the 4-3 SO win over the Stars but had just two shots on goal and really for long stretches looked lost. That must have been because of the absence of Daniel Sedin (his twin brother) who has a broken left foot and will not see the ice for another 4-6 weeks. All kidding aside, Henrik did start to adjust well from about the second period on. He will be just fine.

Not that this has been approached before but Joe Favorito writes a great marketing and PR blog. His latest on the Devils is top notch and a must read on a Monday morning. It is interesting to note that Joe indirectly touches on player access which is a key to marketing and to the press as well. This is something that has driven me nuts for years with the Devils organization. Sometimes it is just what it is and there is little you can do. Here is to hope that it starts changing.

Did anyone happen to catch Dallas’ record this morning? Yes it is 1-0-3 and not a misprint. Like mentioned above they lost a tough one to Vancouver in the shootout. Maybe Coach Crawford needs to put his team through Overtime and Shootout Drills. Because whatever he is doing now is not only not working but failing spectacularly. To me Dallas just cannot get separation on teams. They work hard but just cannot get that two goal lead or three goal lead to put some distance. Then Mr. Turco and crew cannot hold the lead either. It is early however and really there is no cause for panic….YET!

Speaking of crooked numbers…the Islanders are 0-0-3 after a 4-3 SO OT loss on Saturday. When asked of how this keeps happening….here is what Josh Bailey said……

“Right now it seems like we’re finding ways to lose instead of finding ways to win,” New York centre Josh Bailey said. “Something has to change here. You’ve got to give them credit. They came on strong. It’s a tough lesson to learn, but we have to move on.”

Truer words never more spoken. The Islanders were guilty of scoreboard watching and missed assignments galore. They really thought they could sit back. You can never do that in today’s NHL…EVER! Roloson and Biron are nice goalies but that team has to score at least 4 to win most nights. So far they cannot do that and that is why they still have no wins on the young season. Maybe that will change this afternoon against Los Angeles.

Coming up later this morning is Fantasy Hockey 101 as always and then who knows what will be brewing this afternoon. We will follow the afternoon games as well and the night ones. Particular interest is that game in Washington. Is it on Versus? I hope not. Thankfully it is not. So enjoy the games today and do not forget to listen to Preds On The Glass tonight at 8pm ET/7pm CT only on Blog Talk Radio.

Sincerely,
