I want to start off this article by stating that really, it would’ve been okay to talk to me. 🙂
I had one submission for the Captain article I previously posted, and it was a very well written piece. Here it is.
From: Sabre M
Choice: Paul GaustadPaul Gaustad is the definition of a Western New Yorker. He worked as hard as hell to get as far as he has come. He’s huge in the community, he’s one of the friendliest, down-to-earth person I have met. Had I run into him on the street and known nothing about him being a pro-athlete, I would think he was just a nice, approachable guy. He’s loyal, loves the city and will stand up for anyone of his teammates. After the Ovechkin his on Briere last year, Gaustad was the first after Ovie. The previous year, Ovie ran into Marty, and Goose was the first there yet again. The Neil hit on Drury caused Gaustad to throw a fit in the training room, as he was still out with his leg injury. He may not be the best player, but he’s what this team is all about, blue-collar hard work.
…and I agree.
We need somebody who’s not afraid to get in the mix and stand up for his team. Somebody who’s going to be the first man in, last man out. Gaustad fits this bill perfectly. However, I don’t think the Sabres front office sees things our way. The idea of being toyed with pertaining to the “Captain of the Month” system which proved mostly ugly is supposedly being considered again. I really think the Goose should be at least an A throughout the year.
Ultimately my choice lies with Soupy, but Goose ranked top 3 in my head forever. Campbell has pretty much been there, quietly leading the charge on the defensive ranks for the years he’s been with the organization. I also think some sort of leadership role on the Sabres will eventually put his game at the legitimate all-star level that it needs to be to help carry the Sabres forward.
Thanks for the submission, Sabre M.
