Round II: Playoff Summary: May 6, 2007

Buffalo 5, NY Rangers 4
After a 3-2 game, and three 2-1 games, the New York Rangers were pushed to the brink of elimination by the Buffalo Sabres. Being down 3-2 in the series and playing game 6 in the famed Madison Square Garden, if the Rangers were going down, they were not going quietly into the night. They were going to go out with a bang. And they did.
Chris Drury had a goal and assist in the Sabres’ four-goal second period that erased an early deficit and sent Buffalo to a 5-4 victory Sunday over the Rangers. Dmitri Kalinin, Jason Pominville and Jochen Hecht joined Drury in the offensive onslaught that lasted 9:46. Michael Nylander gave New York a 1-0 advantage in the first period, Paul Mara tied it in the second, and Jaromir Jagr scored his 72nd career goal in the third to bring the Rangers within 4-3. The Rangers held a 15-11 shots advantage in the second period, but that was the only highlight of the frame that ultimately ended their season.
Hecht tipped in his second of the game with 5:10 left. Daniel Briere, co-captain with Drury, had three assists. Nylander added his second of the game with the Rangers’ third power-play goal to make it 5-4 with 2:59 remaining. It just wasn’t enough against the NHL’s highest-scoring team.
Ryan Miller made 32 saves for the Sabres. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 24 shots in the net for New York, which dropped its first home game in the playoffs (4-1).
Buffalo survived the battle for New York, by first eliminating the New York Islanders, then finishing a tough series with the Rangers in six. Drury and the Sabres now can erase last year’s bitter memories of losing Game 7 at Carolina with a trip to the Stanley Cup finals on the line. Buffalo will have home-ice advantage this time when they face Northeast Division-rival Ottawa next.
All year long, the Rangers have followed a Czech tradition after a win on home ice. The team gathers at center ice, and raise their sticks to salute their loyal fans. After the final horn and congratulatory handshakes had completed, Jagr and Lundqvist led the team to one last hurrah on the team’s logo.
They just couldn’t do it in the required sixty minutes.
