Fantasy Hockey 101: Whether To Waiver

This week we are surfing the waiver wire for some acquisitions that could help your team out just that little bit. With some big waves forecast for the L.A. and San Diego beaches….this fits in quite well. So whether you are in first, fighting for a playoff spot, or near the bottom of your standings…who knows, this might just help.

So here goes….a few…….that you can always take a flier on…..

Robert Lang (C) — Chicago Blackhawks

Remember early in the season…how many people wanted Lang on the first plane out of O’Hare? Well times have changed and Lang has quietly put up some very solid numbers. His 7 goals and 14 assists are surprisingly good….but his eyepopping +12 makes him a solid investment in leagues. Saturday Night in St. Louis…Lang had one of his best games…scoring a goal with a +2 and 6 shots…he was all over the place and it looked like he had some zip on his shot which seemed to be missing the past couple seasons. The Hawks are hot with Havlat back and face it…if you can snag some Hawks….it won’t hurt right now.

Scott Gomez (C) — New York Rangers

ODD? YES! But for someone so cold…..scoring wise and his normal happy demeanor gone…he is now making up for lost time. 15 points in his last 14 games is not great necessarily but it is consistent and yes Gomez is on enough waiver wires to warrant more than a look. On the power play with Jagr never hurt either….the Rangers are catching their stride a bit offensively (throw out tonight obviously)..and it may be time to get Gomez before someone else does.

Eric Godard (RW) — Calgary Flames

One point? Are you serious? Well those 99 Pims may just be worth taking a risk….especially if Pims are a category you are a bit short in. In deeper leagues where offensive talent is spread around…you can sneak an enforcer or two in your lineup without hurting the overall bottom line. Sort of like a power play specialist or a goalie that just racks up wins and decent stats…it can’t hurt. So if you’re hurting in a category like Pims…there are quite a few enforcers these days to be had…guys like Clarkson, etc….hey…take that shot while you can get it.

Ales Kotalik (RW) — Buffalo Sabres

Yes he only has 14 points…but speaking of specialists….Kotalik does most and almost all his damage when the Power Play is on. 13 pp points…6 of them goals….that is an awfully lethal combo….and he is on most every waiver wire I have seen so far. If you’re hurting on the man advantage and you need someone…anyone just to tide you over…..Kotalik may just be that guy…especially with how the Sabres are scoring right now.

Well these four players may just help your fantasy team…hell they may do more than help at this point…it may just be the difference between winning a week and losing a week. You never know! Good luck!
