Fantasy Hockey 101: Just Another 3 Turkeys!

Well it is indeed turkey time….I have my gravy and mashed potatoes all set for this week’s column. Last week we had a serving of Recchi as our grand turkey baster of the week. This week who knows who it will be……honest!

Without further adieu….here goes nothing…and everything!

Alex Tanguay (LW) — Calgary Flames

So 4 points in 7 games doesn’t seem that bad….right? WRONG! This perennial 20 goal scorer has 1 GWG (and that came on Oct. 24th). His -3 in the last 7 games didn’t help his cause either as talk of a decline in his defensive play has scared some people into dropping him or trading him in fantasy leagues. He does still project out to a 73 point season (20 G 53 A) but his slight downturn if it keeps going could hurt the big cog in Calgary (Jarome Iginla). So if Tanguay doesn’t step up soon…who knows he may have to step out.

Andrei Markov (D) — Montreal Canadiens

This is going to sound odd…but does Markov actually miss Sheldon Souray? Markov might just post Souray like numbers at this rate if trends continue. His -7 in the last 7 games is just hideous enough. Add in the fact that both his points came on the power play in that span and you have the new Russian Sheldon Souray. The contract and pressure of being the #1 d-man in Montreal has clearly got to him. On November 5th, he was a +1 and looking good for a 60 point season…now if he gets 50….he’ll be lucky. Worse, he may end up being something like a -20 or -25….OUCH!

Martin Gerber (G) — Ottawa Senators

Admit it! You saw this one coming from many miles away. If you were smart, you would have dropped Gerber a week or two ago. If you weren’t, you may want to IMMEDIATELY! Not so affectionately called Gerbage by our Ottawa Senators GM…..he has posted a putrid 5.95 GAA and .825 save percentage over the last 2 weeks. If once is an accident and twice is a trend…what the hell is 2 weeks…a train wreck? Perhaps! Ray Emery is starting to play more and looks the less fragile of the two right now. Emery’s stats aren’t much better but they are only stuffing material not a true turkey just yet.

So who is this week’s Turkey Of The Week?

Well it is none other than Martin Gerber by far and away…..

See you next week…..for 3 more fantasy turkeys.
