Fantasy Hockey 101: Holiday Trade Freeze

The Holiday Trade Freeze will be upon us on Wednesday. So from the 19th till the 27th, those wonderful NHL GM’s won’t be able to trade a player that could be on your team. It is a time for fantasy managers to relax a bit. Now I know it doesn’t seem like it….but this is one time of the year….late February is the other that I can recharge the engines a bit and see what I need and don’t need.

So far this is what I have learned from this fantasy season. This has truly been like no other season in the 15 or so years I have been in a league. After 11 weeks…I stand at 55-43-12…not bad for most but for me, it stinks. Being in a tie for fifth is not where I expected to be especially with the talent I have on my team. But you know what, it is what it is. Well losing Joe Sakic has hurt some…but my goaltending trio has hurt more. The most consistent has been Martin Brodeur but Lundqvist and Backstrom have been up, down, and all over the place lately. Add in some erratic offense and surges from other teams and my team has pretty much stayed around .500 in the last four weeks. That will pretty much land you right in the middle of the pack.

So can it be turned around? It sure can. Really it just comes down to goaltending and a little more offense. Doesn’t take much honestly. If the season numbers hold true, I am not too worried. It is only if they don’t….that I will start to worry a bit. Luckily, the free agent wire in my league still has some quality lurking on it…I may just be able to hit that up and get a bit of a bounce out of it.

The trade freeze does make you think some since it falls within the Christmas break. With the extra time off, it is time to make some changes and get it in gear so hopefully I’m not on the outside looking in. Because if there is any time to make some moves…the time is now.
