Fantasy Hockey ONE (2/29)

Lost fantasy points can be a heartbreaker especially when they are a near sure thing.  To the people that may lose this week because of the Eric Condra missed empty net, there are no words that can take that missed attempt back.  However, the fantasy pain is there and we do understand.  It was that kind of Tuesday Night in your fantasy leagues and though it was tough we did come up with a Fantasy POTN and our usual quick look back.  Here we go……

===============================================

Fantasy POTN:

Mike Smith, G, Phoenix Coyotes — 11 starts and 11 wins.  The reality is you could not ask for a better fantasy month for your goaltender.  Honestly it was the perfect month and Smith capped it with a 39 save, 1 GA, shootout win over the Vancouver Canucks.  Smith ownership rates are through the roof right now.  Owners will not trade him right now but that may be entertained in keeper leagues later.  He was the reason why Phoenix won last night plain and simple in a game that was a true goaltender’s clinic.

A LOOK BACK:

Cory Schneider, G, Vancouver Canucks — Sometimes a goalie deserves better and this game was no exception as Schneider and Smith had one hell of a goalie duel.  There is really not much that can be said here as he had a 34 save, 1 GA performance.  Though he faltered in the shootout, the fantasy numbers do not lie.  It will be interesting to see how Coach Alain Vigenault plays this down the stretch and going into the playoffs.  Schneider could play a bit more in March which should be encouraging to fantasy owners as well.

Eric Staal, C/LW, Carolina Hurricanes — Here we go again with another Staal second half surge.  Though this is not the same as the “Spezza Spike”, it is definitely very noticeable for his owners and a good thing.  Suddenly he is up to 54 points on the season and is on pace for 70 points.  Sure this is not great but Staal has had a 17 point month and was a +11.  If the switch stays on in March, who knows maybe he could be that fantasy force you always thought he’d be.  Stay tuned needless to say and finally it looks like his linemates are working for him.  Good news fantasy fans!

SCHEDULE TIME:

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Teams Notes
Pittsburgh at Dallas 7:30 PM | Gameday
Toronto at Chicago 8:00 PM | Gameday
St. Louis at Edmonton 10:00 PM | Gameday
Buffalo at Anaheim 10:00 PM | Gameday

It is a simple four game schedule and we do have a live correspondent for the Sabres-Ducks game tonight so that makes for some interesting show material.  Simply tonight, keep an eye on top lines and god know where the goaltending will be in Chicago.  Also, in another contrasting bit of styles, St. Louis and Edmonton get it together at 10pm ET.  How St. Louis plays against a fast, young team will be key going forward fantasy wise.

We are going to do something different on The Program tonight as we will break down the matchups bit by bit.  Oh that Ryan Miller versus Jonas Hiller matchup either could be very good or very bad.  Watch the first 20 just as a teaser example.

=============================================

Good luck in your fantasy leagues tonight and come listen to The Program at 8pm ET for fantasy hockey and hockey news served just a little extra chilled.  We will make picks on the late games as well.  Thanks for reading……
