This Day In Hockey History (1/6)

People have to understand sometimes just how rare certain feats are and here on “This Day”, we try our best to pay respect to those moments especially.  Some are quirky, some are odd, and some are just plain sublime but we also try to mix in the best and worst as well.  Today, we have one hell of a way to get a hat trick.  This one happened 30 years ago today and involved feisty son of a gun from the New York Islanders.  Hello John Tonelli and here is a video and then the gem….

 

 

January 06, 1981


New York’s John Tonelli tied a team record with five goals and Mike Bossy set a new team mark with six assists in the Islanders’ 6-3 victory over Toronto. It was Tonelli’s first career hat trick.

Yes it is time for This Day once again.  Today’s moment is not about Darren Puppa but you have to love that name as an NHL fan.

 

 

January 06, 2002


In his first return to Phoenix, Tampa Bay’s Nikolai Khabibulin set a franchise-record with his 6th shutout of the season (and the 27th of his career) as the Lightning won 3-0 over the Coyotes. He broke the mark of 5 set by Daren Puppa in ’95-96.

Wow Fedorov fights? Who knew?

January 06, 1996


Detroit’s Sergei Fedorov scored a goal, and added an assist in the Red Wings’ 3-0 win over the Blackhawks, at the Joe Louis Arena. Rookie Kevin Hodson picked up his first career shutout in his first NHL start.
