Fantasy Hockey 101: The Facts Of Fantasy Life…

BallHype: hype it up!

This week we are just doing a short little bit on why it is just important to play out the week. Sometimes we get discouraged when our team is just sputtering around. Then to compound it, the injuries start piling up. Instead of giving up, why not try to make a fight of it. Why? Those weeks you kind of “tank” can be the difference between making or not making the playoffs or just getting that higher seed come Round 1. It does not look like it means all that much in November but come March…there is some meaning to it for sure.

On the other token, can you really “dog it” when up by a seemingly insurmountable margin? No you never should. I am telling you only because it has happened to me too often. Being merciful does not apply in fantasy hockey especially if its for free or for money. The goal is to get as many points or win by as much as possible. Feelings should never be hurt…really it is only a game. Surely we do our fair share of trash talking but should remember when it comes back…it comes back that much harder.

Just keep in mind that the goal to win but to also maintain some decorum at times. I will be the first one to admit that it gets pretty heated. Hell probably some friendships have been lost over what amounts to “just a game”. This is something I do for the love of it but when bigger dollar signs are attached…it does become much more antagonistic. The key is to keep the bad out of what is supposed to be good.

That goes even for free leagues. It is just a fact of fantasy life that sometimes there is a guy that just cleans your clock every week. Remember to give as good as you get but also keep in perspective of what others say about you and to keep it all in fun as much as you can. A little grace under pressure here and there can make the pain of losing a little easier to bare while making the ecstasy of winning just a little sweeter.

So as November rolls along, remember it is just the beginning and hopefully you have more good weeks than bad weeks. Good luck fantasy hockey warriors!!!

Sincerely,

Chris Wassel
