Isn’t it interesting that these would be the two Leafs chosen to go schmooze with the rest of the supposed NHL elite down in Dallas for the NHL All Star festivities? Kaberle, the sole Leaf chosen to make the All Star game, while Steen chosen for the YoungStars.
It might seem like eons ago back when Kaberle was receiving the worst heat from Leaf fans over his career, due to an early season slump. But a fateful day in Montreal where our Alternate Captain scored 3 goals (with the help of Peca’s backside) seemed to change the world for Tomas.
However, Kaberle’s slump could not come close to Alex Steen this season. It took a multitude of injuries to get #10 a break and a rise in his confidence after going scoreless in about a bazillion games.
Once upon a time, Steen would have been the last in a bunch of considered ‘youngstars’ on our own team. And I suppose if Wellwood were healthy, he might possibly have taken Steen’s plane ticket to Dallas, or at least traveled with him. But I take no credit away from this kid. His efforts will be called upon for the second half of the season.
Sitting back and watching Kabs and Steen take the trip to represent our club is rather symbolic of the theme of the 06/07 Leaf season. No matter how bad it seems, things can change for the good. And perhaps this is the message Mr. Maurice will get this club into the playoffs with, despite how watered down his rosters looks or how many injuries pile up along the way.
