Hockey Lingo

Need an update of the latest hockey lingo? Here you go. Read the latest lingo after the jump. Hockey players will enjoy this the most.

Barn – hockey arena. Ex: I can’t wait to play in the home barn Saturday night.

Bar Down – a shot that hits the cross-bar and goes into the net. Ex: I sniped the goalie by going bar down.”

Beauty – a player who is well-liked throughout the team and is very good at hockey. Ex: Dustin Brown is a true beauty in LA.

Bender – a player who isn’t good, bends their ankles when skating. Ex: Look at his ankles! They are about to break! He is such a bender!

Biscuit – puck Ex: Let’s drop the biscuit to start the game.

Celly – goal cellebration Ex: Alexander Ovechkin’s celly after he scores is when he jumps on the glass.

Cherry Picker – a player who stays behind the defense and waits for a outlet pass to go on a breakaway. Ex: Watch out for the cherry picker behind the D!

Chirp – smack-talking to another person on the ice. Ex: Because I was chirping at the official, I received a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Dangle – faking an opponent out while having the puck Ex: That guy was dangled so bad, his jock strap is on the ice!

Deke – a fake out Ex: Bobby Ryan deked David Legwand and was free to score a break-away goal.

Diver – a player who exaggerates a little tap from another player to draw a penalty. Ex: The Vancouver Canucks should change their name to the Divers.

Drop the gloves – a hockey fight Ex: Alex Burrows knows how to talk big, but he won’t drop the gloves.

Duster – a player who isn’t good. Ex: That kid can’t even pass! He is such a duster.

Five Hole – the area between a goalie’s legs. Ex: Getting scored on five hole is the worst feeling for a goalie.

Flow – hair that is perfect and wavy. Ex: Patrick Kane’s playoff mullet has sick flow.


FTB – For The Boys. Ex: Our team plays for one another. We play for the boys.

Gongshow – a rough game. Also, can be an insult to a referee. Ex: During the playoffs, games are usually a gongshow.

Hoser – a loser. Comes from the pre-Zamboni days when the losing team had to hose off the ice. Ex: The Columbus Blue Jackets are such hosers!

In the pipes – a goalie is in the net, between the pipes Ex: I am in the pipes for tonight’s game.

Laser – a quick, accurate shot. Ex: Shea Weber had a laser shot that went through the net!

Lettuce – hair Ex: Jaromir Jagr used to have amazing lettuce on his head.

Light the Lamp – scoring the goal and the goal lamp light on. Ex: Steven Stamkos’ 60 goals last season proved that he could light the lamp.

Puck Bunny – hot chick that dresses up whory to hockey games. Ex: Check out that puck bunny in the third row, section 211. She is so hot.

Rocket – Beautiful girl. Ex: Because the 1980 US hockey team was checking out some rockets in Norway, they were forced to do suicides until they were almost dead.

Sauce – a pass that goes in the air and tape-to-tape Ex: Did you see that sauce over the player’s sticks? It was even tape-to-tape!

Slapper – slap-shot. Ex: Zdeno Chara has the fastest slapper in the NHL.

Sniper – a shooter with a great shot that usually goes into the net. Ex: I was shooting top corner all night. My coach told me I am the best sniper on the team.

Tender – goaltender Ex: I was sniping that tender all game and got a hat-trick.

Toe Drag – where a player uses the toe of his blade to pull the puck in close to his body. Ex: Kyle Okposo’s toe drag around the defender alowwed him to get a back-hand shot on net.

Top Cheese – refers to a shot that goes top-shelf. Ex: Milan Lucic’s top cheese goal knocked off the water bottle.

Twine – the net of the hockey goal Ex: Shea Weber’s shot went through the twine!

Zebra – referee Ex: The zebra hasn’t made a good call yet!

Wheels – a player that has nice and fast skating ability. Ex: Carl Hagelin showed his wheels in being the fastest skater in the 2012 Skills Competition.
