We went from this around 2pm ET……..(Thanks Patrick Hoffman).
According to Mark Everson of The New York Post, the New Jersey Devils are still the favorites to sign UFA Ilya Kovalchuk. Everson reports that the deal could end up being for seven years and could be worth $60 million.
The signing would be a team record and would be the second high profile free agent that has signed with the club in the off-season, the other being UFA defenseman Anton Volchenkov.
As you can tell, hockey super agent Jay Grossman is having a successful summer in New Jersey. Not only is Kovy close to signing in Jersey and Volcheknov is already in the fold in the Garden State, but client UFA goaltender Johan Hedberg also signed with the Devils during the off-season.
If the deal goes through, what will this mean for Jersey? Which player (s) will General Manager Lou Lamoriello have to part ways with in order to make room for Kovalchuk?
Things are certainly interesting in Jersey, aren’t they?
Now around 9:30pm ET……..
Basically we will see you tomorrow. Kovalchuk has narrowed his choices but there is no decision yet. The Devils are still the favorites. By the way, whoever put the headline up in the NY Post has a lot of explaining to do BUT many should have known better.
Either way, we will keep the updates going and who knows maybe some resolution will happen. Thank you and good night.
Sincerely,
Chris Wassel
