The Winners
Philadelphia Flyers — Signed Briere, acquired Jason Smith and Joffrey Lupul…signed Timonen and Hartnell….needless to say a great job by Holmgren and to only lose a disgruntled Pitkanen ….priceless.
New York Rangers — Signed Gomez and Drury to long deals…big salary cap hit…but less in the long term. Only lost Nylander and Ortmeyer…not a big deal really.
The Losers
Buffalo Sabres — Didn’t sign anyone….lost both Drury and Briere. Vanek may still be offered an offer sheet. Unless they nab Comrie and another d-man…it could be trouble.
New Jersey Devils — Yes it hurts for me to say…but it is clear Lou just wasn’t willing to pay Rafalski 6 million a year and I commend him for it. He did try to make a last ditch offer for Gomez…but it wasn’t for over 7 mill per…so maybe it is just as well. But the bottom line is Nylander just went off the board too…so Lou better do something in Day 2.
Los Angeles Kings — Missed out on all the major players…..and flopped badly…maybe they have a plan in Day 2…rumor is they are after Stuart and Hamrlik…we shall see.
Well it was indeed an eventful Day 1…let’s see what happens for Day 2.
