KHL Announces Outstanding Players of Gagarin Cup Semifinals

Following the KHL Gagarin Cup semifinal series, the Kontinental Hockey League has recognized the following top players:

The outstanding goalkeeper of the KHL Gagarin Cup’s penultimate round was George Gelashvili of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. In the semifinals, Gelashvili registered two shutouts and averaged only one goal allowed per game, along with a 95.9 save percentage.

The top defender of the KHL Gagarin Cup was Ak Bars Kazan’s Ilya Nikulin, previously recognized as the best defenseman of the KHL Gagarin Cup quarterfinals. In Ak Bars six game semifinal series he scored two goals and posted a +/- rating of +6.

The exceptional forward of the semifinal round was Oleg Petrov from Ak Bars. In six games he scored four points (three goals and one assist) to lead the Snow Leopards advancement to the finals of the KHL Gagarin Cup.

The best-of-seven games championship round of the inaugural KHL Gagarin Cup begins on Thursday, April 2nd, when Ak Bars Kazan hosts Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.

The Gagarin Cup, the KHL’s post-season tournament, named for famed Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, features sixteen teams consisting of the KHL’s four division winners and 12 other teams with the best overall regular season records.

The first two rounds of the KHL’s Gagarin Cup are best-of-five games, while the semi-finals and finals are best-of-seven games. Game 7 of the finals will occur on April 12th, the anniversary of Gagarin’s mission into space.
