WJC Saturday Night (Day 2)

BallHype: hype it up!

Slovakia 7 Latvia 2 (FINAL)
====================================

Ondrej Rusnak and Radoslav Tybor each tallied twice for the Slovakians as they rallied from an early 2-1 deficit to easily subdue the Latvians 7-2 in Ottawa this evening.

The Latvians went up 2-1 late in the first period after goals by Straupe and Cinks. After a late Slovakian goal tied it up going into the second….the Slovaks 2nd PP goal of the game…they simply took over. Ondrej Rusnak got the game winner for Slovakia. It was reviewed but the puck clearly went by Naurus Enkuzens who faced 43 shots and stopped 36.

The Slovaks showed huge restraint late in the third when up 7-2….they basically passed the puck around the net on the Power Play….a nice sign of sportsmanship in a game where the Latvians had no answers after the first period. The Slovaks improve to 1-0 while the Latvians fell to 0-2. Slovakia has the potential to be a darkhorse to get to the quarters…especially if they can upset Russia or Finland along the way.

In other action, Germany is all over Kazakhstan 7-0 early in the third period. Tomorrow has some big matchups that will provide some fireworks but one thing is for sure…Slovakia has some team chemistry and that may serve them well in this tournament. It does not hurt that they had 15 guys play on the same club team. That is impressive!

Update: Germany went on to win 9-0….out of mercy….we will not do a recap to protect the innocent.
